Recessed Fire Extinguisher Cabinet Stainless Steel

A stainless steel fire extinguisher cabinet suits sites where a powder coated cabinet corrodes. Stainless steel resists chloride, moisture, and cleaning chemicals without a coating that can chip or blister. Checkpoint Group builds each cabinet to order in recessed or semi-recessed form, to house one 2.5kg, 4.5kg or 9kg extinguisher, or a CO2 unit.

When Stainless Steel Is the Correct Specification

Powder coated steel performs well in a dry, conditioned interior. Four site conditions justify stainless steel instead.

• Chloride exposure: coastal sites, marine terminals, desalination plants.
• Wash-down and chemical cleaning: operating theatres, sterile areas, food processing floors.
• High humidity and vehicle exhaust: road and rail tunnels, underground car parks, mine portals.
• Hygiene audit requirements: the surface cleans down with no coating to chip or harbour contamination.

Where none of those conditions apply, a powder coated recessed cabinet does the same job for less.

Grade Determines Corrosion Performance

Stainless steel is a family of alloys, and the grade sets the corrosion limit. Grade 304 suits interior and sheltered applications. Grade 316 contains molybdenum and resists chloride pitting, which is why marine, coastal and desalination specifications call for it. Grade 304 installed within a few kilometres of surf will show tea staining and pitting.Check the grade named in your project specification before you order. Send us the site conditions and the specification clause, and we will confirm the grade for the build.

AS 2444 Requirements

AS 2444 sets the selection and location rules for the extinguisher inside the cabinet. Three requirements control the installation.

• Extinguisher base at least 100mm clear of the floor.
• Top of the extinguisher handle no higher than 1,200mm.
• Travel distance to an extinguisher within 15 metres for Class A risks, measured along the walking path.
