Fires It Can Handle

  • Class A only: timber, paper, cardboard, textiles, plastics and rubber. Water cools the fuel below its ignition point and prevents reignition within the material.
No chemical residue after discharge. That matters in food handling areas, textile and paper storage, server and switch rooms adjacent to Class A risk, and anywhere powder contamination causes product loss or a shutdown for cleaning.Typical applications: construction sites, timber yards, packaging and waste areas, farm sheds and machinery, mining, heavy industry, manufacturing.

Where to Not Use Water

  • Class B flammable liquids: the stream spreads burning fuel
  • Class C combustible gases: no rating, no effect
  • Class D combustible metals: water reacts violently
  • Class E electrical: water conducts, so never discharge onto live equipment
  • Class F cooking oils and fats: causes boil-over and fire spread
A water unit covers one class. Sites with electrical, flammable liquid or cooking risk need ABE powder, CO2 or wet chemical alongside it. Our AS 2444 selection guide setsout which type suits which hazard.

How to Identify a Water Extinguisher

All-red body, no coloured band. Other types carry a band over the red: white for ABE powder, blue for foam, black for CO2, oatmeal for wet chemical. Full breakdown in our fire extinguisher colour code guide covers all five.

Mounting and Placement

AS 2444 sets the position, not just the product:
  • Base at least 100mm clear of the floor
  • Top of the handle no higher than 1,200mm
  • Maximum 15 metres travel distance from any point on the floor to the nearest Class A extinguisher, measured along the path a person walks
  • Smaller units cannot be combined to substitute for one unit of the required rating

Signage Requirements

AS 2444 requires an identification sign above each extinguisher, positioned so the type and its fire classes are readable on approach. An extinguisher without a compliant sign fails the placement check regardless of the unit's own certification.

Servicing and Maintenance

Under AS 1851-2012:
  • Six-monthly inspection by a competent person
  • Yearly detailed service, including signage, location and bracket check
  • Hydrostatic pressure test at five years
A discharged extinguisher, even partly discharged, requires service immediately rather than at the next scheduled visit. Intervals and record-keeping detail in our fire testing intervals guide. Manufacture sits under the ACCC mandatory standard for portable non-aerosol fire extinguishers.
