This surface mount emergency downlight fixes to the face of the ceiling, so it goes in where there is no plenum above the slab to recess into. It carries a D40 classification, runs for 2 hours on battery, and is hardwired.

What the D40 Classification Does for Your Design

The classification is the figure your lighting designer works from. AS/NZS 2293.1 sets the layout using spacing tables tied to each fitting's classification and its mounting height.Swap a D40 fitting for a lower classified one during a fit-out and the spacing that was signed off no longer holds. That leaves a dark patch on the escape path even though the replacement light works when you flick the test switch. Order to the classification the design calls for, and record it in the log book.

Maintained Operation

A maintained luminaire runs its lamp on normal supply and stays lit when supply fails. One fitting then serves as general ceiling light and emergency light from the same position, which suits corridors, foyers and back of house areas where you would otherwise fit two luminaires.

Two Hours of Runtime

The battery holds the fitting for 2 hours. The benchmark duration for buildings sits at 90 minutes, and the discharge test under AS/NZS 2293.2 runs the fitting for its full rated duration every six months. IP20 covers solid objects and offers no water protection at all.
