What this device is, and what it is not

Be clear on this before you specify it.This is a supplementary alerting device on your Orisent system. It is not a smoke alarm complying with AS 3786, and it is not part of a fire detection and alarm system designed and installed to AS 1670.1. It doesn't discharge any obligation you hold under the National Construction Code for building fire detection.Install it as your local or state emergency and fire regulations require, alongside the detection your building or project already needs. What it adds is a notification path to the people managing the site, which a standalone alarm sounding in an empty store room does not give you.

Where it earns its place

  • Site sheds, temporary offices and lunch rooms left unattended
  • Store rooms holding flammable materials or packaging
  • Plant and switch rooms with no routine occupancy
  • Areas following hot works, during the cool-down watch period
  • Battery charging and storage areas
  • Any space that's occupied by day and empty overnight
The hot works case is the one most sites underuse. Your permit system already requires a watch period after work stops. A detector left in place through that period gives you a notification path once the watch ends, which is when most hot works fires actually declare themselves.

Bluetooth changes the placement rules

Radio frequency devices on this system reach hundreds of metres. Bluetooth doesn't. It needs an enabled device or a phone running the app much closer than that.Plan for it. A detector in a store room 300 metres from the nearest trigger has nothing to talk to. Site it where the network already reaches, or extend the network to cover it.

Batteries are the failure point

Six batteries, no mains supply, and a device that sits somewhere nobody visits. That combination fails quietly.Put battery checks into an existing routine rather than a separate one. Keep charged spares on the shelf so a flat unit gets replaced the same day rather than noted and forgotten.Tell us which unoccupied spaces on your site carry the most risk and we'll work out detector positions and network coverage together.
