What is PHOS-CHEK Fire Retardant?

Serious bushfire home defence starts long before you can smell smoke. PHOS-CHEK Wildfire Home Defence Fire Retardant is a concentrate supplied in a 2.8L bottle for protecting homes and properties ahead of fire season. It's the same undyed product that aerial bombers drop on large-scale bushfires around the world, packaged for you to apply with a garden sprayer.

How Fire Retardants Work

Fire retardants coat the fuel a bushfire feeds on: grass, vegetation and wood. PHOS-CHEK consists of fertiliser-type salts that react with organic material as fire approaches, making it effectively unburnable. That slows the rate of combustion, takes the momentum and heat out of the fire, and gives firefighters a far better chance of controlling it.

Why Bushfire Home Defence Starts Before Fire Season

• Application needs nothing more than a garden sprayer.
• You can treat your property months ahead of fire season rather than as a fire closes in, which is what the manufacturer recommends (subject to rainfall).
• Spray dead or dry grass, plants, wood and other vegetation around your home as a preventative layer.
• Correctly applied, the solution stays on materials until washed or rubbed off, again subject to rainfall.

How to Apply Fire Retardant

Clear away as much debris as possible first: leaves, wood and loose plant material. Less fuel means less fire risk if flames reach your property. Shake the concentrate well, then mix 1 part PHOS-CHEK with 5.5 parts water in your sprayer. Aim at the target area and soak it thoroughly. Vegetation should be dripping wet and ground cover soaked down to the mineral soil.
