Maintenance Service Tag

The fire extinguisher service tag is an aluminium service record. It stays with a fire extinguisher or other item of fire equipment for its working life. The technician punches each service into the tag in the space for that month and year. A site manager, technician or assessor reads the full servicing history without opening a logbook.

What AS 1851 requires on the tag

AS 1851-2012 is the Australian Standard for routine service of fire protection systems and equipment. Clause 1.16.4 sets out what a service record tag must carry. It needs the title AS 1851 Service Record, plus a mark in the space matching the year and month of the service. The mark identifies the level of service performed:

• A dot or punched hole for a three-monthly service
• 1 for a six-monthly service
• 2 for a yearly service
• 3 for a three-yearly service, where it applies
• 4 for a five-yearly service
• 5 for a recharge after use, where it applies

Portable fire extinguishers run on a six-monthly service cycle. A compliant tag therefore shows a mark twice a year from the year the unit entered service. A gap in that sequence is the first thing a fire safety assessor or insurer will find. Safe Work Australia sets out the PCBU duty to keep an emergency plan effective. Equipment that has drifted out of service weakens the response that plan assumes.

Punch it, do not write on it

Ink fades, rubs off in plant rooms and washes away outdoors. Aluminium holds a punched mark for the life of the equipment. The Maintenance Tag Punch stamps the month, year and service level cleanly. Fit the tag to the extinguisher valve or the hose reel with a Maintenance Service Tag Ring, sold separately.

What the tag does not tell you

The tag records servicing, not use. A Fire Extinguisher Anti-Tamper Security Tie/Seal is for that purpose. It holds the safety pin to the valve. A broken seal flags the unit has been used and should be checked before another emergency happens.
