Klaxon Duplo Evacuation Siren Kit

This industrial evacuation siren covers open sites where a building alarm cannot be heard. The Klaxon Duplo is a motor driven siren producing 127dB at 1 metre on a single 1600Hz tone. The kit pairs the siren with a separate activation button and a mounting bracket, and it runs on a hard-wired 230V supply.

Where It Suits

  • Construction sites and laydown yards
  • Remote accommodation camps
  • Conveyor lines and plant areas where machinery noise masks a standard sounder

What This Siren Is Not

The Duplo produces one tone at a fixed frequency. It cannot generate the standard Australian alert and evacuation signals, so it does not serve as an emergency warning and intercommunication system. Where the National Construction Code requires an occupant warning system for the building, AS 1670.4 governs the design and commissioning of that system. Confirm the requirement with your fire engineer or certifier before you rely on a siren alone. On a mine, quarry or open construction site, the duty is different. Your emergency plan must provide for effective communication between the person coordinating the response and everyone at the workplace. A siren audible across the whole site is how most open sites meet that duty.

Mounting and Noise Exposure

The 127dB(A) figure applies at 1 metre from the siren. The exposure standard for noise in Australian workplaces is an LAeq,8h of 85dB(A) and an LC,peak of 140dB(C), and a PCBU must keep worker exposure below both. That sets three rules for placement.
  • Mount the siren high and clear of any position a worker occupies for a shift
  • Keep it away from crib rooms, offices and permanent workstations
  • Where workers routinely work near the siren, have a competent person assess noise under AS/NZS 1269.1
Test the siren as part of your scheduled evacuation exercise, not at random, and warn the site before it sounds.

Installation

The siren runs on 230V mains and requires hard wiring. A licensed electrician must carry out the installation and the connection of the activation button. Plan the cable route to the button before you set the siren position, because the button belongs where a warden can reach it, not where the siren mounts.Where you need the siren without the activation button and bracket kit, the Klaxon Duplo siren is available on its own.

Wired or Wireless

A wired siren suits a fixed site with an established layout and available mains power. Cable runs, trenching and an electrician are part of the cost.A site that changes layout every few weeks, or that has no mains at the point you need coverage, is a harder case for cable. Wireless call points and sounders move with the work front and expand without rewiring. Compare both before you commit to a trench. Our Cygnus SiteProtect wireless alarm system and the wireless alarm systems guide set out how the wireless option works.
