1 m x 1 m Fire Blanket

The Commander 1m x 1m fire blanket is the compact size. It suits a domestic kitchen, a caravan, a boat galley, a 4WD or a small workshop bench. Woven fibreglass construction meets AS/NZS 3504. The blanket smothers a small contained fire by cutting off its air supply.

How to use it correctly

Fire and Rescue NSW sets out the steps, and one of them is the step people get wrong.

• Pull the two tabs to release the blanket from its bag
• Hold the tabs towards yourself so the blanket shields your hands
• Walk slowly to the fire with your arms out in front of you
• Let the blanket touch the front of the stove first, then lay it over the fire
• Leave the blanket in place for at least thirty minutes
• Turn off the gas or electricity at the appliance or the mains if you can reach it safely
• Call Triple Zero

Never carry a burning pan. Never throw the blanket. Never put water on a cooking oil fire. A blanket is a one-use item, so replace it once it has covered a real fire. Our guide on how and when to use a fire blanket covers the rest.

Where the 1m size fits

One metre square covers a single pan or a small bin. Step up in size for a domestic cooktop with several burners, or for a commercial galley. On a commercial site it belongs alongside a wet chemical extinguisher, not instead of one.
