Description

Cygnus SiteProtect Crane Cab Alarm/Call Point CYG24FCA

The CYG24FCA crane cab alarm mounts inside the cab and gives the operator two things: a 75 dB(A) sounder with a high intensity LED strobe so they know the site alarm has gone, and a first aid call point they can press if they become unwell. You can disconnect the sounder where the beacon alone raises the alarm with the driver. The unit runs on a single battery pack with at least 12 months life.

The cab is the one place the site alarm doesn't reach

A tower crane operator sits above the noise, inside a closed cab, often with a radio or music on. Site sirens fitted at ground level are inaudible from there, and an operator who doesn't know an evacuation has started keeps lifting over an area people are moving through. The cab alarm puts the signal where the operator is, rather than relying on someone reaching them by radio while they're already busy.

Getting an unwell operator help

An operator who becomes unwell at height can't get themselves down quickly and can't be reached quickly either. The first aid button reports to the control panel with the unit's name, so the panel shows the crane rather than a general first aid alert somebody has to chase. Naming the unit by crane number matters more here than anywhere else on site, because the response involves a rescue plan rather than a walk to the incident.

Why the sounder can be turned off

75 dB(A) inside a closed cab is loud, and some operators find it startling enough to be a hazard in itself while a load is in the air. Disconnecting the sounder leaves the strobe working, which suits cabs where the operator's eyeline crosses the unit. Make the decision with the crane crew rather than at the specification stage, because it depends on where the unit ends up mounted.

Working through the rest of the system

The cab alarm reports through the same network as every other device, so an activation appears on the CYG14 control panel alongside call points and detectors. Pair it with the exclusion zone alarm at the lift zone below and both ends of the lift are covered by the same system. The full Cygnus SiteProtect range sets out the other devices.

Isolated work and your emergency plan

Regulation 43 of the model WHS Regulations requires you to prepare, maintain and implement an emergency plan, and Safe Work Australia's guidance requires that plan to make provision for medical treatment and assistance. The model WHS Regulations also carry a separate duty to manage risks to workers who work remotely or in isolation, including a system of effective communication. A crane operator working alone in a cab sits squarely in that category.Call 1800 273 473 or email sales@checkpointgroup.com.au with your crane numbers and cab types, and we'll sort mounting positions.
