Description

ABE (Powder) Fire Extinguisher Identification Sign

An ABE fire extinguisher sign mounts above the unit and states which fires it covers, so nobody has to read a cylinder label in a hurry. This one is poly, 190mm square, and suits indoor and outdoor positions.

What the Sign Tells Someone

ABE dry chemical powder covers Class A ordinary combustibles, Class B flammable liquids and Class E energised electrical equipment. It leaves out Class C combustible gases and Class D combustible metals. The sign puts those classes in front of the person reaching for the handle, which is when the decision gets made. Our fire extinguisher colour code guide sets out how each Australian band maps to its classes.

The Sign Has to Match the Unit

An ABE sign above a CO2 cylinder is a routine audit finding, and it does more damage than no sign at all, because it tells someone the wrong thing in bold red and white.Check the sign against the cylinder before you mount it. ABE powder carries a white band around the top of the cylinder under AS/NZS 1841.5, so the band and the sign should agree. Where they disagree, one of them changed and nobody updated the other. Our Commander extinguisher range shows the band on each unit.

Where It Mounts

Fit the sign directly above the extinguisher, at 2 to 2.5 metres above floor level, in line with our site signage guidance. That height clears head height and most racking while keeping the sign tied to the unit below it.The identification sign does close-range work. A separate location sign marks the position from across the floor, and a compliant position carries both.

When the Sign Points to the Wrong Extinguisher

ABE powder makes a mess, drops visibility in a confined room and corrodes equipment when nobody cleans it up promptly. Server rooms, comms rooms and archives generally suit CO2 instead, as our extinguisher type guide explains. An ABE sign in one of those rooms usually means the extinguisher selection needs another look, and the signage is the symptom.Selection and placement both sit under AS 2444, with the full standard held by Standards Australia.Ordering against a full extinguisher schedule?
