Fires It Can Handle

Class A and Class F.

• Class A: timber, paper, cardboard and textiles.
• Class F: cooking oils and animal fats in deep fryers, woks, chargrills and range tops.

The agent reacts with the hot oil and forms a soapy layer across the surface, sealing it while the liquid cools the oil below its flash point. Cooking oil holds heat long after the flames drop, which is why sealing the surface matters as much as knocking the fire down. Without that seal the oil reignites.

How to Discharge It

Apply the agent gently across the surface of the oil rather than directly into it. A forceful discharge splashes burning oil out of the vessel and spreads the fire. Slow, sweeping application from the edge is the technique, and it belongs in kitchen staff training rather than being worked out during an incident.

• Class E electrical: the agent conducts, so isolate the appliance before use

AS 2444 covers the selection and location of fire blankets alongside extinguishers, which is why a compliant kitchen assessment places both rather than one. A blanket handles a contained pan fire without discharging anything, and it stays useful when the extinguisher is out of reach behind the line. Mounting and Placement

Under AS 2444:

• Positioned between 2 and 20 metres from the cooking equipment, far enough to reach safely and close enough to matter
• Base at least 100mm clear of the floor
• Top of the handle no higher than 1,200mm
• Smaller units cannot be combined to substitute for one unit of the required rating

Mounting a Class F unit directly beside the fryer defeats it. If the fire blocks the route to the extinguisher, the extinguisher is not available.

Signage Requirements

AS 2444 requires an identification sign above each extinguisher, mounted at 2 to 2.5 metres so the type and its fire classes are readable on approach. An extinguisher without a compliant sign fails the placement check regardless of the unit's own certification.

Servicing and Maintenance

Under AS 1851-2012:

• Six-monthly inspection by a competent person
• Yearly detailed service, including signage, location and bracket check
• Hydrostatic pressure test at five years

Any extinguisher that has been discharged, even partly, requires service immediately rather than at the next scheduled visit.
