Custom Safety Trolleys: Yatala Labour Prison Redevelopment

Location: Northfield, South Australia
Project Value: $180 million
Company Awarded: Mossop Construction + Interiors
We supplied custom Cygnus safety trolleys to Mossop Construction + Interiors for the Yatala Labour Prison Redevelopment in Northfield, South Australia. Five trolleys are on site so far. More are on the way as the build continues.
The project
The Yatala Labour Prison Redevelopment expands secure accommodation at the existing prison, as part of a state government initiative. Mossop Construction + Interiors holds the managing contractor role on the $180 million project. The scope adds two double-storey high-security accommodation buildings, a specialised support building, new admissions and kitchen facilities, and upgraded site security infrastructure. The build has run for more than two years on a site that stayed operational throughout construction.
The problem: a build that keeps changing shape
A prison redevelopment does not sit still. New buildings come online in stages. Work fronts shift between compounds. A facility that stays operational through construction cannot afford a fixed safety point that only serves one area.
A cabinet bolted to a fence solves the problem for one zone. It creates the same problem again the moment work moves to the next. Mossop needed first aid, fire response and alarm coverage that travelled with the crew instead of staying behind.
What we supplied
Each trolley holds a Cygnus SiteProtect first aid alert call point. It sounds a distinct tone across the site the moment someone presses the button. A 4.5kg ABE fire extinguisher on the same unit covers paper, wood, textile, liquid and electrical fires. An Aero bleed and trauma kit handles civilian haemorrhage incidents, and aluminium snap frames hold the site evacuation plan and emergency contact list at eye level.
Why it suited the build:
- Wheels let the trolley move with the crew as work fronts shift between buildings
- The Cygnus call point raises a first aid or evacuation alert with no wiring back to a panel
- Fire, first aid and evacuation information sit on one unit instead of three
- Every trolley follows the same build, so a new one drops straight into the fleet
The outcome
Mossop has taken five trolleys so far, spread across active work zones on site. Further units are expected as the redevelopment continues. Each addition follows the same build, so the crew already knows how to use it before it arrives.
