Safety Trolleys: Ipswich Hospital Carpark

Safety Trolleys: Ipswich Hospital Carpark

Location: South Street, Ipswich CBD, Queensland

Project Value: $114 million

Company Awarded: ADCO Constructions

We supplied temporary Cygnus safety trolleys to ADCO Constructions for the Ipswich Hospital Carpark project in Ipswich, Queensland. Twelve trolleys are on site so far. The relationship builds on earlier work Checkpoint has done with ADCO on other sites.

The project

The Ipswich Hospital Carpark is a $114 million build on South Street in the Ipswich CBD. Health Infrastructure Queensland is the client. ADCO Constructions is building a seven-level structure with a minimum of 800 spaces for hospital staff, patients and visitors. The design allows for an extra level to be added later, as demand grows. The project runs over 31 months and supports the wider $710 million Ipswich Hospital Stage 2 Expansion.

The problem: alarm coverage for a site with no building yet

A hospital expansion needs safety infrastructure from day one, long before there is a building to fit it into. ADCO's crews needed a way to raise a first aid or evacuation alert straight away. The CBD site runs demolition, excavation and multi-level construction side by side.

ADCO had already used Checkpoint's Cygnus system on earlier projects. A temporary alarm setup the crew already knew how to use meant the safety programme could start on day one, with no fit-out to wait on.

What we supplied

Each unit is a mobile first aid trolley fitted with a Cygnus wireless call point for evacuation and first aid alerts. Pressing the button sounds a site-wide alarm. No cabling runs to it, so the trolley works on its own the moment it rolls off the truck.

Why it suited the build:

  • Wheels let the trolley move with the crew as work fronts shift across the site
  • The Cygnus call point raises an alert with no wiring back to a fixed panel
  • First aid supplies and the alarm sit on one unit, easy to find in an emergency
  • ADCO's crews already knew the system from earlier projects, so no training gap on day one

The outcome

Twelve trolleys are in use across ADCO's sites, spread through the different work fronts on the Ipswich build. The existing relationship meant the order went straight to delivery. Nobody had to re-specify a system ADCO already trusted.
